The 2025 Academy Awards: Thoughts and Predictions

Best Actor in a Supporting Role: The best performance in a category that isn’t all that stacked will rightfully win. And as a side note, I’m not sure how Borisov was even nominated…his character gets to do almost nothing.

The Nominees: Yuri Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Edward Norton (A Complete Unkown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice)

Will Win: Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain)

Should Win: Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain)

Best Animated Feature Film: This is a great bunch, and it’d be lovely to see Flow win since it’s also up for best international feature, but The Wild Robot looks like it’s pretty far in the lead.

The Nominees: Flow, Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, The Wild Robot

Will Win: The Wild Robot

Should Win: The Wild Robot

Best Animated Short Film: I dunno…I head it’s good?

The Nominees: Beautiful Men, In The Shadow of The Cypress, Magic Candies, Wander to Wonder, Yuck!

Will Win: Magic Candies

Best Original Screenplay: I’m not sure you can award best screenplay to Anora when most of the movie is just yelling back and forth, and I imagine The Brutalist will get knocked for using AI (even though it shouldn’t). So I think it goes to either the Substance or A Real Pain, with the latter edging it out simply because the dialogue is the real driving force.

The Nominees: Anora, The Brutalist, A Real Pain, September 5, The Substance

Will Win: A Real Pain

Should Win: The Brutalist

Best Adapted Screenplay: Conclave has to win somewhere and it looks like this could be the lone win.

The Nominees: A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Perez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing

Will Win: Conclave

Should Win: Conclave

Best Live-Action Short Film: Timely and good. So I’ll roll the dice here.

The Nominees: A Lien, Anuja, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent

Will Win: A Lien

Best Production Design: Conclave is a feat for rebuilding The Vatican, and The Brutalist looks absolutely epic despite. But Wicked is up for a lot of awards and the technical aspects seem to be where it’ll win big.

The Nominees: The Brutalist, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Nosferatu, Wicked

Will Win: Wicked

Should Win: The Brutalist

Best Costume Design: Ditto what I said before, even though it’s more deserving here.

The Nominees: A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Gladiator II, Nosferatu, Wicked

Will Win: Wicked

Should Win: Wicked
