Best Documentary Feature: Given the political climate and what seems to still be a the forefront of conversation, expect 20 Days In Mariupol to be the night’s winner, although To Kill a Tiger was the most moving documentary I saw this year.
The Nominees: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, To Kill a Tiger, 20 Days in Mariupol
Will Win: 20 Days in Mariupol
Should Win: To Kill a Tiger
Best Documentary Short Subject: Again, The ABCs is as timely as the documentary feature category, but I’m not up to speed on this category and wouldn’t be surprised if Nai Nai & Wai Po wins given its Netflix distribution.
The Nominees: The ABCs of Book Banning, The Barber of Little Rock, Island in Between, The Last Repair Shop, Nai Nai & Wai Po
Will Win: The ABCs of Book Banning
Best Supporting Actress: It’s Da’Vine Joy Randolph. She will win, she should win, and you probably need to keep the tissues close by when she delivers her speech.
The Nominees: Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), America Ferrera (Barbie), Jodie Foster (Nyad), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)
Will Win: Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)
Should Win: Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)
Best Sound: Part of me thinks this one will go to Oppenheimer simply because it’s going to clean up so many awards on the night. But The Zone of Interest received more love from the academy that I would have anticipated, and if ever there was a category for it win, it’s absolutely this one. Sound helps create the dichotomy of this hellscape, and it’s the bridge between the beautiful and the vile pursuits of humanity.
The Nominees: The Creator, Maestro, Mission: Impossible- Dad Reckoning, Oppenheimer, The Zone of Interest
Will Win: The Zone of Interest
Should Win: The Zone of Interest
Best Cinematography: The lone category where I’d be completely fine with any film being declared the winner, I’ll stick with Oppenheimer for this technical achievement, even though if forced to choose I’d go with Rodrigo Pietro’s work on Killers of the Flower Moon.
The Nominees: El Conde, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Poor Things
Will Win: Oppenheimer
Should Win: Killers of the Flower Moon
Best Film Editing: Another technical category, another likely win for the biggest winner of the night.
The Nominees: Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Poor Things
Will Win: Oppenheimer
Should Win: Anatomy of a Fall
Best Visual Effects: Marvel gets lots of nominations here but never wins, Mission: Impossible seems unlikely since it prides itself on practical stunts, and Napoleon doesn’t necessarily scream visual effects. My choice would be The Creator, but when something as obscure as Godzilla Minus One gets the nomination, I tend to think it’ll get the win too.
The Nominees: The Creator, Godzilla Minus One, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Napoleon
Will Win: Godzilla Minus One
Should Win: The Creator
